The Powerboat Level 2 course serves as an introductory programme for those interested in learning how to operate a motorised boat. This comprehensive training programme is designed to provide a solid foundation in seamanship and the basics of practical boat handling. Created by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the course is available in various countries around the world.
This two-day course is instructor-led and combines both theoretical and practical elements. Unlike traditional courses, there is no final exam. Instead, participants are continuously assessed by a qualified instructor. Upon successful completion, participants receive a licence.
This Powerboat Level 2 licence is not only valid in the UK but also allows you to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is necessary if you wish to operate a boat under 10 metres in length abroad. Many European countries require a licence to operate a vessel, making this certification particularly valuable.
Where can you obtain your PB2?
The RYA Level 2 courses are offered worldwide at registered RYA sea schools. No matter where you take the course, you can expect the same high standard of instruction. If you prefer to train locally, you can find a sea school near your home or where your boat is based. However, if you aim to deepen your boating knowledge or pursue a career in the marine industry, consider training in renowned areas such as Poole Harbour, Portsmouth, or Southampton.
Can you use your skills abroad?
The Powerboat Level 2 course is predominantly practical, covering a variety of essential topics while providing a strong theoretical foundation that is applied throughout the two days. Key areas of focus include:
Boat Handling:
- Launching and recovering a powerboat
- Handling at low and high speeds
- Manoeuvring, including turns, reversing, and mooring
Safety:
- Proper use of personal safety equipment
Maintenance of boat safety equipment
Conducting emergency procedures, such as man overboard drills
Navigation and Chartwork:
- Introduction to charts and navigation aids
- Basic chart plotting and route planning
- Using GPS and other navigation tools
Rules and Regulations:
- Understanding local and international boating regulations
- Responsibilities for collision avoidance and safety
Weather and Tides:
- Basic understanding of weather patterns and their effects on boating
- Knowledge of tides and their impact on navigation
In addition to these areas, the course also covers personal safety and equipment, emphasising the importance of wearing appropriate personal flotation devices, understanding navigational rules, and handling emergency situations. You’ll learn how to operate and control a Personal Watercraft (PWC), including techniques for acceleration, steering, stopping, and manoeuvring in various water conditions.
The course also delves into rules and regulations specific to PWC use, including local byelaws, speed limits, and no-wake zones. Understanding navigation and chart work is crucial, as it teaches you how to determine where you can go and how to get there safely, using chartwork, buoyage, and electronic navigation methods.
Weather and tide awareness is another critical aspect of the course. Knowing how these natural forces interact is vital for planning safe outings. The course emphasises responsible PWC operation, including respecting other water users, protecting the environment, and ensuring the safety of both the rider and those around them.
