Callosum seed round funding hits $100m as Atomico backs AI compute routing play

Callosum, a London-based AI infrastructure startup, has closed a $100 million seed round (one of the largest at that stage by a European AI infrastructure company) in a deal that puts the Callosum seed round funding squarely at the centre of the UK’s push to build domestic AI capability. Atomico led the round, with Plural and the UK Sovereign AI Fund also participating.

Founded in 2024 by Cambridge PhD graduates Danyal Akarca and Jascha Achterberg, Callosum has built a platform that routes AI workloads across different models and hardware providers, rather than locking developers into a single chip architecture or system. The idea is to give developers flexibility across an increasingly fragmented landscape of AI processors.

First investment from the UK Sovereign AI Fund

Callosum holds a particular distinction in the context of UK government AI policy: it was the first company to receive investment from the UK Sovereign AI Fund. According to WIRED, the fund is set to invest roughly $675 million in homegrown startups working across fields including model development, agentic AI and drug discovery. That scope is broader than the fund’s public framing sometimes suggests, and Callosum’s place at the front of its portfolio says something about which bets the government is prioritising.

WIRED also reported that portfolio startups will gain access to free visas for international hires, a detail that matters for a sector where competition for AI engineering talent is acute. For an early-stage company like Callosum, being able to hire globally without the friction and cost of UK visa applications is a practical advantage as much as a symbolic one.

The company has also been named in the UK’s £1.1 billion AI hardware plan, aimed at bolstering homegrown chip companies. That association with two distinct government programmes in the same funding announcement is worth pausing on: it suggests Callosum is being positioned, at least in part, as infrastructure for a domestic AI strategy rather than just another venture-backed startup.

What the Callosum seed round funding buys: partnerships and a new platform

Alongside the fundraise, Callosum announced a series of partnerships with AI hardware companies. Two of the named partners stand out: Cerebras, the US chipmaker, and Rebellions, a South Korean semiconductor startup. The pairing reflects the cross-border hardware ecosystem that Callosum’s platform is designed to navigate.

The startup also unveiled what it describes as “programmable heterogeneity”: a technical approach that breaks AI workloads into smaller tasks and assigns each to the most suitable model and processor. The proposition is that no single chip or model is optimal for every part of a complex AI workload, and that routing intelligently between them can improve both performance and cost efficiency. Which leaves an obvious question: how much of that efficiency gain is theoretical versus demonstrated at production scale? The partnerships with Cerebras and Rebellions may be partly designed to answer that.

UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan framed the broader stakes in a statement accompanying the announcement. ‘AI is nothing without the chips that underpin it, and the eye-watering demand for them is only going to grow,’ he said. ‘Success will depend not just on having access to those chips, but on using them as efficiently as possible.’ That framing maps directly onto what Callosum is selling: not more compute, but smarter allocation of the compute that exists.

Investor appetite for this kind of infrastructure software has been building for some time, as the costs of running large AI models have made efficiency tooling a commercial priority. A $100 million seed round from investors including Atomico suggests that appetite is translating into serious capital commitments. The next question is whether the Callosum seed round funding produces a platform that hardware buyers and AI developers actually adopt at scale, or whether the government endorsement runs ahead of real-world traction. The partnerships announced this week are the first test of that.
