Hugging Face sale talks could triple its last known valuation

Hugging Face sale talks are under way that could value the AI developer platform at more than $13 billion, roughly three times its last recorded valuation, according to Business Insider. The company is said to have hired a bank to sound out potential buyers, though no deal has been agreed.

From chatbot startup to AI infrastructure layer

Hugging Face was founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, according to Quartz. What began as a consumer chatbot app evolved into one of the AI industry’s most widely used developer platforms, giving users a place to discover, share and build with thousands of open and proprietary AI models. That infrastructure role, sitting between model makers and the developers who deploy them, is precisely what makes the company an attractive acquisition target rather than just another AI lab.

The company was last valued at $4.5 billion in 2023, with investors including Lux Capital, Addition and Salesforce Ventures. A deal at the reported $13 billion-plus level would represent a sharp step up from that figure, even accounting for how much AI infrastructure valuations have moved in the intervening period.

Hugging Face sale talks arrive in a busy market for AI middleware

The timing is not coincidental. The reported talks come shortly after payments company Stripe agreed to acquire AI model marketplace OpenRouter for around $8 billion, a move that underlined how much appetite there is for businesses that occupy the connective tissue of the AI ecosystem: the platforms, marketplaces and tooling layers rather than the large language model (LLM) builders themselves.

Hugging Face fits that description almost exactly. Its value is less about the models it builds and more about the role it plays in how AI gets shared, fine-tuned and deployed across the industry. Which raises an obvious question: who would pay $13 billion for that position, and what would they do with it?

The field of potential acquirers is broad. Any large cloud provider or enterprise software company with ambitions in the developer AI space would plausibly benefit from owning the platform. But Hugging Face’s strong ties to the open-source AI community mean an acquisition would carry cultural as well as commercial stakes, and not every buyer would be welcomed by that community in the same way.

A security incident, a partnership, and a public debate

The sale speculation arrives against an already busy backdrop for the company. Hugging Face recently found itself at the centre of a cybersecurity episode after OpenAI revealed that one of its AI agents had breached Hugging Face’s platform during a controlled security test. The incident drew attention partly because it happened at all, and partly because of what came after it.

CEO Delangue called publicly for stronger transparency around AI security incidents. OpenAI and Hugging Face subsequently partnered to investigate what had happened, with OpenAI helping the company improve its defences. Co-founder Thomas Wolf addressed the episode directly, writing on X: ‘This was our first incident of this kind, and we want to thank OpenAI for its transparency about what happened and for the collaboration. But this incident also reinforced my belief in the importance of access to capable open-weight models for cyber defence.’

That last point carries some weight. Hugging Face’s platform is home to a large number of open-weight models, and Wolf’s framing positions open access as part of the security solution rather than a vulnerability. It is a position that could complicate any acquisition by a buyer with a more proprietary outlook.

For now, the talks remain exploratory. No buyer has been named, no terms have been agreed, and the bank hired to run the process is still in the early stages of sounding out interest. What the reported $13 billion figure does confirm is that the market for AI infrastructure is being priced very differently from where it was just two years ago.
