FLT Refresher Course: Why Ongoing Forklift Training Matters

Forklift accidents don’t announce themselves. One moment everything’s routine; the next, a near miss — or worse. That’s precisely why an FLT refresher course isn’t just a box-ticking exercise. It’s a genuine intervention in how operators work, think, and stay safe.

Forklifts are everywhere: warehouses, distribution centres, construction sites, manufacturing floors. Initial training gets operators certified. But skills drift. Habits creep in. And the workplace itself changes around them.

Why Skills Fade — Even Among Experienced Operators

Here’s the thing: experience and competence aren’t the same thing.

An operator who’s driven the same route through the same warehouse for three years probably feels confident. Maybe too confident. Familiarity breeds shortcuts — a glance instead of a proper check, a slightly too-fast turn, a load that’s a little off-centre. None of it dramatic. All of it dangerous.

Refresher training catches this. Not punitively — the goal isn’t to catch people out. It’s to surface habits that have quietly developed since initial certification and correct them before they cause real harm.

The situations that most commonly prompt an FLT refresher course include:

  • A set period of time since last training (many organisations schedule it every three to five years regardless of incidents)
  • An accident or near miss on site
  • Introduction of new equipment or operating systems
  • Changes to the physical environment — new layouts, different load types, revised traffic routes

Each of these shifts the risk profile. Refresher training helps operators recalibrate.

What Actually Happens in a Refresher Programme

Not much preamble. Operators with existing experience don’t need to learn how to start a forklift. What they do need is honest assessment of where their practice has drifted from safe standards.

A well-structured programme covers both theory and practical work.

Theory revisits the fundamentals: stability and load capacity, pedestrian safety, hazard awareness, legal responsibilities. Even experienced operators benefit from this — regulations change, and updated guidance doesn’t automatically find its way into daily habits.

The practical element is where it gets real. Instructors observe and assess: pre-use inspections, load handling, manoeuvring, situational awareness. They’re looking for what’s actually happening, not what operators think they’re doing.

Constructive feedback follows. That’s genuinely one of the most valuable parts — getting specific, honest input on performance rather than a pass/fail certificate.

On-Site or External? Both Have Their Trade-offs

On-site training keeps everything familiar. Operators work in the actual environment they use every day, which means the training directly reflects real risks. Fewer travel arrangements, no adjustment period.

The downside? Operational pressures bleed in. Someone needs covering on the loading dock. A delivery’s arrived. Distractions undercut focus.

External training centres flip this. Quieter, more consistent, properly equipped — but operators are training somewhere that doesn’t look exactly like their workplace. For complex or unusual environments, that gap matters.

Some organisations split the difference with blended approaches: digital learning modules for theory, practical sessions conducted on-site. Worth considering, particularly for larger teams.

The Pushback — And Why It Doesn’t Hold

Expect some resistance. Experienced operators sometimes view refresher training as an implication that they don’t know what they’re doing. Fair enough — that’s a reasonable human reaction.

But consider what assessment actually finds. Unsafe habits surface regularly among operators with years of experience. Not because they’re careless. Because habits form gradually and invisibly, and nobody’s pointed them out until now.

The costs of skipping refresher training tend to be larger than the cost of running it. Accidents, equipment damage, insurance claims, operational downtime — these aren’t theoretical. They happen, and they’re expensive.

Technology Is Changing the Picture

Modern forklifts aren’t what they were. Telematics systems now record how vehicles are actually being used — speed, impacts, operator behaviour patterns, fleet utilisation. Employers can identify where training is most needed before a problem becomes an incident.

Simulator-based training is also growing. Virtual environments recreate congested warehouses, poor visibility, emergency scenarios — genuinely useful for practising high-risk situations without actual risk. That said, simulators supplement practical training. They don’t replace it.

The Bottom Line

An FLT refresher course isn’t about doubting experienced operators. It’s about acknowledging something straightforward: skills need maintenance, just like equipment does.

Workplaces change. Regulations update. Bad habits develop quietly. Refresher training addresses all three — reinforcing what good practice looks like, catching what’s drifted, and building the kind of safety culture where near misses get reported rather than ignored.

The question isn’t really whether to invest in refresher training. It’s whether to do it proactively or wait for an incident to make the decision for you.
