The beauty industry and fitness industry have seen unprecedented rise in the past decades due to the cumulative effects of technological advancement, an increased consciousness towards looks and the rise in affordability. A recent trend in this process has been the rise in the numbers of liposuction surgeries. A liposuction surgery is done to remove fat from the selective areas of the body and is seen as a very convenient alternative to exercising or dieting. A study has claimed that the steep rise in the liposuction surgeries of almost 12% within a period of 2017-2018 is due to the desire to look good in the gym clothing which is in vogue.

Liposuction: the risks and limitations

Liposuction is a procedure which has its own pros and cons. The doctors have not given it a clean chit from health risks and always asserted that it cannot be a proper substitute for weight loss. It is not a one-time solution as it will not the process of weight gain, in fact, it has limitations with respect to the target body areas as that is subject to the health and safety concerns. Additionally one cannot even slim down the areas to any level, as that the level of reduction is also subject to medical concerns.

The link with athleisure clothing

Studies in UK have shown that facelifts and liposuctions have witnessed the most growth within all the types of cosmetic surgeries in the past few years. 92% of all the cosmetic surgeries are done on women, and the most common and important cause of this is the rise in body image consciousness in women.

It is an era of athleisure clothing like bra-sized tops and leggings, and other fitting and figure hugging attires have taken centre stage. These types of clothing are based on a tendency to expose the physique rather than covering up or hiding. In order to look good in such clothing women are increasing resorting to shortcut solutions like liposuction surgeries. In is interesting to note that the number of men going under the knife is reported to have decreased by 4.7% in the year 2018. In 2017 the popular surgeries apart from face-lift and liposuction were breast reduction, breast augmentation and eye-lid surgery (blepharoplasty).

The doctor’s verdict

The doctors assert that the liposuction procedure should be seen as the last resort by anyone seeking to lose weight. They say that there is no shortcut to losing the extra fat from your body and taking risky measures such as liposuction surgery just for the sake of looking good is not an alarming trend. It should not be forgotten that ugly instances of such surgeries having gone wrong and even proving fatal for people have been reported in the past. Hence, it can be concluded that for a lasting, risk-free and effective weight loss one should inculcate a fitting workout routine and also start paying heed to their eating habits. There cannot be any other better substitute for these measures.
