QuantumLight second fund close lands $500m for AI-focused VC push

The QuantumLight second fund close has been confirmed at $500m, the venture capital firm co-founded by Revolut co-founder Nik Storonsky announced. According to TechFundingNews, chief executive Ilya Kondrashov said the fund was oversubscribed. Which raises an obvious question: what does a $500m war chest actually signal about where early-stage AI investment is heading?

From launch to QuantumLight second fund close in short order

QuantumLight was co-founded in 2023, according to EU-Startups. The speed of its progression to a second fund, and the size of that fund, says something about the appetite among limited partners for AI-oriented venture strategies right now. Oversubscription is a data point, not a guarantee of returns, but it does suggest the firm had more capital on offer than it needed and chose to hold the line at $500m rather than absorb everything available.

Kondrashov’s confirmation of oversubscription is worth pausing on. Fundraising environments have been uneven across the VC landscape in recent years, with many managers extending timelines or trimming targets. Closing at a hard cap when demand exceeds it is a deliberate choice, one that typically reflects a view about what can be deployed effectively rather than what can be raised.

Portfolio track record and the unicorn count

TechFundingNews reports that QuantumLight’s portfolio has supported 27 companies so far, including five unicorns. That ratio, roughly one unicorn for every five or six portfolio companies, is the kind of number that tends to make LP conversations easier. It also gives some shape to the firm’s investment thesis: the focus appears to be on a relatively concentrated set of bets rather than a spray-and-pray approach across dozens of early-stage positions.

The firm’s stated strategy centres on AI-native businesses. That framing has become common enough in venture marketing to be almost meaningless on its own, but the portfolio composition and the fund size together suggest QuantumLight is competing for larger, later-stage rounds within that universe rather than purely writing seed cheques.

Storonsky’s broader orbit

Nik Storonsky’s name carries obvious weight in the context of European fintech, given his role at Revolut. Whether that affiliation actively helps QuantumLight attract founders or limited partners is harder to assess, but the firm has clearly built a track record it can point to independently of his profile. Five unicorns from 27 companies is a portfolio story in its own right.

The co-founding relationship also matters for understanding the firm’s positioning. QuantumLight is not a side project or a personal vehicle in the conventional sense; it has a chief executive in Kondrashov and, by the evidence of this close, a functioning fundraising operation capable of pulling in institutional capital at scale.

What the fund size tells us

$500m is a meaningful number in the current environment. It is large enough to lead or co-lead growth rounds in AI companies that have moved beyond the earliest stages, and it puts QuantumLight in a different competitive bracket from seed-focused micro-funds. At the same time, it is not so large that the firm would be forced into the mega-round territory where sovereign wealth funds and the largest crossover investors tend to dominate.

The oversubscription detail adds another layer. If LPs were willing to commit more than $500m and the firm declined the excess, the fund’s investment pace and portfolio construction discipline become the next thing to watch. A manager that raises less than it could is either being conservative about deployment or has a specific view about what the opportunity set actually supports.

With 27 companies already in the portfolio and a fresh $500m to deploy, the more concrete question now is which sectors within AI QuantumLight targets next. Kondrashov has not, based on available reporting, specified a sector breakdown for Fund II.
