The idea of authoritative parenting can seem harsh, strict, or even terrifying to some parents. The word authority can evoke a lot of doubt and fears when it comes to parenting.

However, authoritative parenting can be extremely valuable for parents or adults in charge of raising children, especially for raising independent and responsible children.

We have compiled the following information to give you a better understanding of authoritative parenting.

Why Authoritative Parenting?

When parents exercise good authority without harming or traumatizing their children, they provide them with the necessary tools to develop appropriately.

I believe it is essential to clarify that exercising authority in parenting does not constitute abuse or control. All it takes is establishing and communicating basic rules with clarity and firmness.

This way, children will benefit from stability and structure, two essential pillars for their development as independent and balanced individuals.

An authority is not exercised by imposing but by the parent’s self-confidence and love. To exercise your role as an authoritative parent, you need to develop a trustworthy relationship with your children. Having a healthy relationship with your son or daughter makes it easier to establish limits and guidelines. For instance, you know that cotton onesies are your kid’s favourite, so surprise them with one. By doing so, they will see that you care for them, making them more willing to open up to you.

The key to a successful parent-child relationship is attachment, respect, and trust. You would never have to question your authority anymore, as your child loves and respects you.

The parent-child relationship is likely to be authoritarian when you lack the essential elements of respect and trust. Eventually, you would be too controlling, lose patience, and promote an attitude of challenge in them.

It is fundamental that parents set reasonable limits for their children. Nothing good comes from extremes. A controlling and overprotective parent is likely to have unintended consequences for their children. The same happens with permissive parents.

Parenting is all about loving, respecting, and providing support to your children. However, it has nothing to do with being permissive. Parents who leave all rules up to their children only contribute to the child growing up without understanding their limits. It ultimately leads to a disadvantage since the child is unable to understand and admit to limits, mainly because they are unfamiliar with the world, unlike an adult.

Limits are crucial for self-respect, self-awareness, and respect for others. In addition to having difficulty forming healthy relationships, they may also have a hard time adjusting to society. As a result, permissive parents end up raising children with behavioral problems compared to authoritative ones. In some cases, they may even harm themselves with addictions, risky behaviors, or even commit crimes.

Furthermore, it is essential to note that limits and rules should not be set forcefully or violently. It is crucial for children to understand that they come from an act of love and care from the wisdom of their parents, and they will not perceive it as an attack on their wishes or desires.

Benefits of Authoritative parenting

The benefits of authoritative parenting are numerous. In general, we can observe that children raised by this type of parenting are more independent and responsible.

Children raised with authoritative parents are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety in their adolescence and adulthood.

They can understand the importance of respecting themselves and others. Children within this group are exceptionally mature, capable of self-regulation, healthily adapting to the environment, and leading balanced lives. Furthermore, they have a clear awareness of their responsibilities.

These children are confident from every point of view, capable of handling daily problems and challenges effectively.

By implementing limits early on, children are less likely to cave in to pressure or obligation from others. Their decision-making skills enable them to act freely and take control of their lives.

Bottomline

Authoritative parenting goes beyond barking orders and demanding compliance. In contrast, it’s about being a good role model or setting a good example for our kids and imparting basic life skills to them.

In contrast to authoritarian parents, authoritative parents are warm and loving. They know affection is crucial to nurture children.

You may want to consider setting a few minutes every day to give your child your undivided attention. Your child will feel loved and accepted when you spend quality time together. You may also want to take them to their favorite parks or buy their favourite kids clothing. It is imperative that they feel confident about who they are and what they are capable of.
