Be it for maintenance, cost-reduction or an inspection, any temporary shutdown of your firm’s plant facilities can be tough, so it’s important that you’re organised and work hard to keep everything running smoothly.

Managing a plant shutdown of any size or duration can be a challenge for even the most experienced of managers, so here are some tips on how you can make the process easier so that you can get things back to normal as efficiently as possible.

Analyse Historical Data To Learn About How The Shutdown Should Progress

Read through previous shutdown data to explore the rough budget, time and information you’ll need during your firm’s shutdown so that you can learn from previous experiences. This will give you a strong foundation for your shutdown plan, although it’s important that you remember that every shutdown is different.

Software Can Make The Planning Process Easier

Planning a temporary shutdown can be hard as it involves lots of different factors, including timesheets, various different outsourced contractors and monetary constraints. To help you manage everything properly, use shutdown software specifically designed to help you to reduce the turnaround time and make the process easier to oversee. It can also help you to keep all the documentation together and make the whole process more efficient.

Roles May Change During The Shutdown

Shutdowns can force things to change, including the roles of members of staff. It’s important that you provide staff with support during this time and give them a clear outline of their roles and responsibilities. Have regular progress meetings throughout the shutdown so that you and your team can all collaborate and understand how the process is going. You should also host one-to-one meetings with individual members of staff so that you can check how they’re doing and make sure that they understand their role and how it impacts on the shutdown process as a whole.

Use The Shutdown As A Chance To Improve Conditions

Even if your shutdown isn’t for maintenance or cleaning you should use it as an opportunity to undertake these important tasks to reduce the need for further shutdowns in the future and keep your staff safe. Undertake any improvements or servicing that you can to your equipment whilst the shutdown is in effect, and work with a specialist cleaning company like Ideal Cleaning to deep clean the premises during the outage.

Keep Calm

Organising a plant shutdown can be tough, and there may be various events that occur and challenges that you need to overcome throughout the experience. Try to keep calm and make sure that you are rational and have a clear mind with which to make decisions throughout the shutdown.

The most important factor to consider when you’re managing an industrial plant shutdown is to be organised so that everything goes according to plan and you have the staff and support to cope if anything does go awry. Follow these tips to make the process manageable and get your plant back up and running so your business can go back to supporting its customers and giving them the service they deserve.
