Amex Virtual Cards Expansion Brings Conferma and @ Work into Commercial Payments

American Express has moved to broaden its Amex Virtual Cards expansion into commercial payments, integrating the cards with its @ Work platform and partnering with Conferma as a third-party token facilitator. Which raises the practical question: what does this mean for the treasury teams and finance departments that have been managing commercial spending with far blunter tools?

What the Amex Virtual Cards Expansion Actually Involves

At its core, virtual cards work by generating unique digital card numbers that can be scoped and controlled before they are ever used. A business can issue a card for a single supplier payment, set a spending limit, restrict it to a particular merchant category, and let it expire automatically. No physical card required, and no need to share standing card credentials with a contractor or a new employee.

The expanded programme goes several steps further. According to Electronic Payments International, American Express Corporate Programme customers can now create, manage and use Amex Virtual Cards through solutions from Conferma. The Conferma setup includes spending controls, enhanced transaction data, customisable reporting and digital receipt capture through the mobile app, giving finance teams a more connected view of what is being spent and where.

Separately, as reported by Morningstar, corporate customers can create and manage Amex Virtual Cards directly inside the @ Work platform, which is already used to manage Corporate Card applications, track employee spending and generate reports. Critically, @ Work can integrate with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and expense management platforms, which means virtual card transactions do not have to live in a separate silo from the rest of a company’s financial data.

One detail worth noting on reach: the Amex Virtual Cards in @ Work are currently available to select US-based American Express Corporate Programme customers, with broader availability planned. So this is a rollout in progress, not an instant switch for every corporate cardholder.

Where Virtual Cards Fit into Commercial Spending Workflows

The appeal of virtual cards for commercial payments is not simply that they replace a plastic card number. The real attraction is the control layer they introduce into processes that have historically generated a lot of manual work.

Travel and expense reimbursement is the obvious example. The traditional flow involves employees paying out of pocket, gathering receipts, filing reports and waiting for reconciliation. A virtual card issued for a specific business trip, with spending parameters set in advance, can collapse several of those steps. Transactions flow into expense systems in closer to real time, reducing the administrative load on both employees and finance teams. American Express has previously worked with Emburse on a virtual card programme for expenses, and the Conferma integration represents a similar philosophy applied to the broader corporate card stack.

Supplier payments are another area where the control and auditability of virtual cards matter. Instead of sharing a standing card number with a vendor, a business can issue a single-use number for a specific invoice, which limits exposure if that number is ever compromised.

The Longer-Term Context: AI Agents and Commercial Payments

The expansion is happening against a backdrop of two converging pressures. One is familiar: businesses are looking to tighten spending controls and reduce administrative friction, particularly in a difficult macroeconomic climate. The other is newer and less settled.

As companies begin exploring AI agents that can take actions on their behalf, including actions with financial consequences, questions about trust and auditability become urgent. The controllable, scoped nature of virtual cards, where parameters are set before a card is used and every transaction carries enhanced data, could make them a useful building block for any commercial environment where automated agents are involved. That is speculative territory for now, but the infrastructure being put in place through programmes like this one is at least pointing in a direction that could accommodate it.

American Express has said broader availability of the @ Work virtual card capability is planned, so the current select rollout is the starting point rather than the finished picture.
